SATURNIIDAE

Saturniidae is a family of ditrysian Lepidoptera belonging to the superfamily Bombycoidea, comprising 2,300 species. It includes some of the world's largest and most spectacular butterflies, such as the Atlas moth and the Spanish moon moth.It is worth noting that the adult does not feed; its mouthparts are atrophied or absent, and it has a very short lifespan. Generally, the larvae feed on the leaves of trees or shrubs. Some are serious defoliators and are considered pests. There are varying degrees of sexual dimorphism among the species, but in general, males possess longer and more complex antennae with feathery branches. They use these to detect the pheromones of females. They are distributed primarily in tropical and subtropical regions, with their greatest diversity in the New World.
