Nymphalids (Nymphalidae) are a family of glossate lepidopteran insects belonging to the clade Ditrysia (superfamily Papilionoidea), with nearly 5,000 species distributed worldwide. Some species are relatively large and have bright colors. Many possess striking colors and patterns that advertise their toxicity to predators; these are called aposematic colors. In contrast, the ventral surface of the wings of some species displays patterns that allow them to blend in with the surrounding bark and dry leaves, as part of a crypsis strategy to protect themselves from predators.
