DYNASTIDAE

The Dynastinus are a monophyletic subfamily of beetles in the family Scarabaeidae, whose members are commonly called "rhinoceros beetles" or "Hercules beetles" because of the large horns that the males of some species have on their heads or thoraxes in their adult stage. They measure up to 15 cm.

Most adult dynastinus are active at night or at dusk. Their diet consists of rotting fruit, while dynastinus larvae feed on dead organic matter or living plant material. Larval stages can last for several years. Members of some genera within the subfamily Dynastinae are classified as pests.
