ARCTIIDAE

ARCTIIDAE

Arctiinae is a large and diverse subfamily of Lepidoptera with approximately 11,000 species found worldwide, 6,000 of which are Neotropical (Scoble 1995). It was formerly considered a family (Arctiidae) within the Noctuoidea order.

This subfamily includes groups commonly known as tiger moths, which are usually brightly colored. Many species have caterpillars with abundant hairs, hence their alternative name, woolly bears.
